National Night Out is less than two months away, and all neighborhoods and other establishments, such as businesses and churches, are being encouraged to sign up for the big night.

The original idea behind National Night Out, started 36 years ago by the National Association of Town Watch, is that neighbors lock their doors, turn on their porch lights, and gather outside to let the criminals know that the neighbors are united and watching, and that the criminals are not welcome in their neighborhood. At these gatherings, it was surmised, neighbors could get to know one another and, in so doing, be better able to present a united front against crime 365 days a year.

Over the years, some events have evolved from those humble beginnings, and some have stayed the same. Some events are not much more than a few neighbors gathered in someone’s front yard enjoying some refreshments. Other events gather thousands in large venues from dozens of surrounding neighborhoods.

It’s up to you and your neighbors how you celebrate National Night Out, but the most important thing is that you get out there and celebrate it — and then use it as a catalyst toward better understanding and cooperation that lasts all year long.

A community meeting will be held Tuesday evening in the City Council Chamber at City Hall for groups to officially sign up for Suffolk’s 2019 National Night Out festivities. The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 442 W. Washington St.

We encourage all neighborhoods, businesses, churches and other entities to get involved with this “going-away party for crime.”
