After competing in the Tidewater Summer League, Dominick Claxton is looking to keep his baseball skills sharp.
After transferring from Ferrum College last year, the former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy standout made his way to NCAA Division I. He transferred to Old Dominion University to play baseball, but due to NCAA rules, he had to sit out this season. However, Claxton has been keeping his game sharp at ODU and this summer, playing with and against different collegiate competition.
Claxton recently competed in the Tidewater Summer League, where he played for the Outer Banks Daredevils. He took the time during the summer league to showcase and work on the things he had learned being in the ODU baseball program for a year.
“I hadn’t seen any live pitching this season because of my redshirt season, so I was just trying to find my consistency at the plate,” Claxton said. “I had a great summer, though, just showing off my range and making some really good catches, even some diving catches.”
He said his redshirt season gave him a chance to step back and learn philosophies in all aspects of the game. He wanted to take full advantage of displaying what he had learned in the summer league, where last year he was All-Star.
“I can tell physically and mentally that I’m a much better player than I was this time around last year when I had transferred into ODU.”
With the summer league now finished, Claxton wants to continue working on his game so that he can make an impact starting in the fall. He followed up with a strong sophomore campaign, even though he dealt with injuries.
While at Ferrum, he immediately stood out, grabbing the Conference Rookie of the Year award. At NSA, he was an All-Conference and an All-State selection.
