The Old Dominion University football team was up for an ESPY at the ESPY awards Wednesday evening but didn’t come away with it.
The ODU football team had some stiff competition when it came to deciding who would take home the trophy for the biggest upset of the year. ODU’s upset of Virginia Tech last year in one of college football’s most exciting games was recognized as one of the five best upsets in sports last year.
Unfortunately for the Monarchs, they didn’t come away with the award. Instead, they barely missed out, with boxer Andy Ruiz Jr. taking the trophy after his upset of boxer Anthony Joshua.
The 2018 ODU football team featured three Suffolk natives — Demetrius Stitmon, Kane Miskell and Marvin Branch. Both Stitmon and Miskell played solid roles in the game to help the Monarchs get the upset win.
