A back-to-school resource fair this August will help Suffolk students and parents prepare for the upcoming school year.

The resource fair is free to attend and will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, 204 Walnut St. This fair is a combined effort by Suffolk Public Schools, Suffolk Public Library and Suffolk Parks and Recreation.

“By bringing all of the key players together that play a part in student success, we are creating a one-stop shop for families to start the school year off successfully,” Suffolk Public Library’s Youth and Family Services Manager Jennifer S. Brown stated in the press release.

While many services at the fair are meant for younger participants, students of any age will be able to register for school at the resource fair. Families will need to bring the necessary paperwork, a list of which can be found online at spsk12.net/registration.

Immunization consultations will also be available. Families can bring their children’s shot records and speak with a nurse about what they will need in order to be up to date.

Attendees will also be able to receive vision screenings on site, learn about before and after school care and other resources and services to help start the school year successfully.

The resource fair will also have fun activities like bounce houses, in addition to a school supply and book giveaway, free haircuts, snacks and back-to-school clothes while supplies last.

Furthermore, the Suffolk Public Library will collect new and used clothing for 5- to 12-year-olds at each library branch. Clothing can be dropped off during business hours through Aug. 7 at Chuckatuck Library, 5881 Godwin Blvd.; Morgan Memorial Library, 443 W. Washington St.; and the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road.

Community members interested in volunteer opportunities can sign up to help clean and sort donated clothes on Aug. 8 and 9. Contact Suffolk Public Library’s Jennifer Brown at jsbrown@suffolkva.us or 514-7162 for more information on volunteering.
