Resource fair good for all

It’s hard to believe the back-to-school season has started already, but here we are, knee-deep in notebooks and folders in the department store aisles, trying to gather paperwork, planning when we’ll have time to get the kids’ haircuts and wondering what kind of time warp we’ve been living in since mid-June that caused half of the summer to be gone in the blink of an eye.

Thankfully, an excellent joint effort by Suffolk Public Schools, Suffolk Public Library and Suffolk Parks & Recreation is bringing a lot of the needed resources under one roof next Saturday, which is, unbelievably, Aug. 10. Yes, the end of next week is almost midway through August.

This resource fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, 204 Walnut St.

On site will be registration for school for any age student, for which families will need the necessary paperwork. A list of the needed paperwork can be found at www.spsk12.net/registration.

A nurse will give immunization consultations; students can receive vision screenings; families can learn about before and after school care; and get many other resources and services that will help them.

Free haircuts and a giveaway of school clothes and school supplies, while they last, will also be available. And, of course, there will be fun things like snacks and bounce houses.

The donations of new or used clothing are being collected at Suffolk library branches. Clothing can be dropped off during business hours through Aug. 7 at Chuckatuck Library, 5881 Godwin Blvd.; Morgan Memorial Library, 443 W. Washington St.; and the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road.

We applaud the involved agencies for working on this event and hope many families will take advantage of it.
