Mustard and tax-free weekend

Mustard doesn’t belong in ice cream — even though the classic mustard company French’s is trying its best to convince people it does — but it definitely belongs on hotdogs.
This Saturday is National Mustard Day. Yes, there’s such a thing, and leading the festivities is, believe it or not, the National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wis. This is the definitive proof that there is a special day for everything, and a special museum for nearly everything.
But we digress.
We think we know the perfect place to celebrate soon — David’s Dogs & Catering, the lunch cart that has been making Suffolk folks smile for the last few months. The hotdog man, David Waechter, started his business in March and operates outside of the Godwin Courts Building on North Main Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, and at the North Main Street Walmart from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Saturday. He also has plans to expand his services to North Suffolk, and there are plans to expand the menu, as well. Hotdogs, hamburgers and smoked sausage are currently on offer, and Waechter is also looking to add barbecue sandwiches.
We think Waechter’s growing business is great, and we wish more food carts and food trucks would be able to take advantage of the hungry clientele here in Suffolk.
After you stop by Waechter’s cart on Saturday, make sure to take advantage of the tax-free shopping weekend. Supplies for hurricanes and other disasters, clothes, school supplies and WaterSense and Energy Star products are all discounted by virtue of the fact that you get to skip the sales tax. It’s the perfect time to stock up if you need to refresh your hurricane supply kit, buy some new clothes — for school or otherwise — grab some school supplies and office supplies, or make some home improvements with a new ceiling fan or faucet.
