Take winning photos at upcoming events

The Suffolk Art League is still accepting submissions for a photo contest that will feature 12 winning submissions in a 2020 calendar that showcases Suffolk’s beauty and personality.

There’s plenty of opportunities for new photos at various events that are coming up in the city this August, including National Night Out on Tuesday and the Nansemond Indian Tribe Powwow on Aug. 17-18.

Suffolk Art League Executive Director Linda Bunch said photographers should take photos at these upcoming events because they’re filled with the sort of excitement that makes Suffolk great. There have been a lot of good submissions so far, but photos of events are few and far between.

“There are quite a few events coming up before the contest deadline that people can get some current photographs from, and we would like to encourage people to do that,” Bunch said.

Photo entries must be submitted digitally to suffolkartleague@verizon.net no later than Aug. 24. Each photograph chosen for inclusion will win a $50 prize.

This calendar contest is sponsored by Suffolk Tourism and Keep Suffolk Beautiful and is open to photographers of all skill levels.

All photographs must have been taken in Suffolk, Va., within the past three years, and photographers may submit up to three photographs in landscape orientation for consideration. A panel of judges representing the Suffolk Art League, Suffolk Art Gallery and Suffolk Tourism will select the final images for the 2020 calendar.

Each photo must be in digital format between 8 and 20 megapixels (minimum 2550 x 3300 pixels), high resolution (300 dpi) and in JPEG, JPG or GIF format. The photos may be in color or black and white.

Photographs of Suffolk parks, events, trails, architecture, athletic facilities, public spaces and waterways are encouraged, and the images may represent different seasons.
