Dorothy Everett, 91, of Suffolk, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019, at the home of her son, the Rev. Donald Everett. She was born in Portsmouth to the late Julius Williams and Octavia Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leslie James Everett; two sisters, Janie Smith and Mildred Williams; three brothers, James Williams, Bill Williams and Leon Williams.

Dorothy Everett worked for more than 25 years in her restaurant, Jenny’s Old Fashion Hamburgers, in downtown Suffolk on Hall Avenue — originally located on East Washington Street. She was known as Mrs. Jenny to most. Prior to owning Jenny’s, she served as a nurse’s aide, having received her training from Norfolk State University. She also worked as a health care attendee (now known as home health care). She later turned one of her homes into a home for the elderly, where she provided assistance and care. In her earlier years of employment, she worked at the Butter Dish and General Electric. This was before she decided to become an entrepreneur. After many years of hard work, Dorothy recently retired from Jenny’s Old Fashion Hamburgers as owner and operator.

She was a devoted member for more than 50 years of East End Baptist Church, where she also faithfully attended Sunday school. Mrs. Everett always had a favorite seat at church, where she had a direct line to her preacher. She leaves to cherish her memories four children, two daughters, Gwendolyn Gambrell, of Gamer, N.C., and Hortense Colander, of Clayton, N.C. (Bishop John Colander), and two sons, the Rev. Donald Everett, of Portsmouth, and Timothy Everett, of Suffolk. She also leaves to cherish her memories 13 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
