The Warriors golf team will host its first invitational this Friday at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course.

With the golf season officially starting this week, Nansemond River High School has put together a competitive invitational that will involve some of the best teams in the Hampton Roads. About 12 teams will compete, and a trophy presentation will follow. Warriors golf Coach Brandon Frye is excited about it.

“This is the first time we’ve done this, and it’s something we are looking forward to,” Frye said. “It’s the first time at Nansemond River that we hosted an invitational and the first time at Bide-A-Wee as well. We just wanted to find a way to help grow the game. We plan on having an awards ceremony after, and the kids will be able to have lunch afterward. It’s going to be great.”

Frye has already started envisioning this becoming an annual event for Nansemond River. In fact, he has already been contacted by coaches who want to get their teams in for next season. The invitational will feature two Suffolk teams, bringing in King’s Fork High School as well as Nansemond River.

“I think this the only one really in our area we have going on,” Frye said. “There aren’t many invitationals that go on yearly throughout the whole state of Virginia, so it’s just pretty cool to be able to get everything together. The folks over at Bide-A-Wee approved it with no problems, and everything is looking good to go.”

Teams from the Beach District, Eastern District and Southeastern District will be featured among others. The invitational will start at 8 a.m.
