Registration is open for the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center’s “Hunger Games” this September.

This center is a 501c3 non-profit located at 211 E. Washington St. and is one of Suffolk’s busiest outreach centers, offering free groceries, meals, clothing, household goods and other resources to those that need assistance.

The Hunger Games challenge is a non-perishable goods drive that coincides with September’s Hunger Action Month, in which Americans nationwide stand together with food banks to fight hunger, according to feedingamerica.org.

“We’re trying to capitalize on the opportunity to bring awareness that there is still hunger in our community,” said Lorna Slaughter, Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.

Canned goods and other non-perishable items are needed to replenish the center’s supplies. Churches, nonprofits, schools, businesses and other organizations may register for the Hunger Games. The center will also distribute information on its different programs and services throughout this event.

The group that donates the most pounds of non-perishables will be named “Hunger Games Champion 2019,” complete with bragging rights and a plaque.

Those that don’t wish to register and participate are still encouraged to donate non-perishable goods independently, Slaughter said, and those that don’t need the center’s programs and services themselves are encouraged to spread the word to family, friends and neighbors that may be in need.

Slaughter said it’s up to the Suffolk community as a whole to make sure that those that need help get help.

“This particular responsibility rests on the shoulders of the entire community,” she said, “because eventually it will affect the community as a whole. We’re looking for neighbors to help their neighbors in need. It’s a community effort.”

The challenge will run from Sept. 1 through 30. Call Intake Coordinator Carlisa Hawkins at 353-0471.
