Horace Barnes

Horace “Blue” Barnes, 73, of Brook Avenue, Suffolk, transitioned Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, at his residence. He was the son of the late Rosa Armstrong Barnes and Ocie Barnes. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willie L. Barnes.

He was a graduate of Suffolk Public Schools, served in the Army, and was the owner and proprietor of Barnes Automotive for 20 years. He worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 30 years. Horace was a faithful and dedicated member for more than 60 years of East End Baptist Church, where he served in Men of Praise, the Transportation Ministry and the Family and Friends Ministry.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Beulah M. Barnes-Wright (Bernard) and Vivian Barnes, both of Suffolk; sister-in-law, Dorothy Barnes, of Suffolk; aunt, Rosemary Bess (Mason), of Hamden, Conn.; nieces, Tanya R. West (Clarence), Deatrice Johnson (David), both of Suffolk, and Willetha Winborne (Jamer), of Florida; nephews, William Barner (Vondlear), Kenneth Barner, Karl Daughtrey (Betty), all of Suffolk; great-niece, Taylor West and Caelyn West; great-nephews, Clarence S. West, III; a host of relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held noon Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, at East End Baptist Church, 1056 Portsmouth Blvd., Suffolk. He will be entombed in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive guests at 624 Brook Ave., Suffolk. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home Inc.
