A large police presence on Route 58 Sunday afternoon was due to a police pursuit that ended in a crash and a subsequent search for the driver.
Motorists on Route 58 saw multiple police vehicles from both Suffolk and Chesapeake police departments, as well as at least one police dog, during the search.
Senior Police Officer Leo Kosinski, a spokesman for the Chesapeake Police Department, said police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle on Airline Boulevard between Jolliff Middle School and Holly Cove Boulevard, and the pursuit started when the driver failed to stop.
The vehicle was reported stolen in North Carolina, Kosinski stated in an email.
The driver, headed westbound, crashed in the center ditch in front of the Hampton Roads Executive Airport around noon and fled on foot, Kosinski stated.
The driver is described as a slender black male in his late teens or early 20s, Kosinski stated. The driver is still at large.
