Keep Suffolk Beautiful will hold its Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day on Saturday in the Lowe’s parking lot at 1216 N. Main St. The recycling drive is for Suffolk residents only, and an ID is required for bringing household hazardous waste and tires. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s a really good, free service that happens a few times a year,” said Wayne Jones of Keep Suffolk Beautiful, “where residents can get rid of things like tires, household hazardous waste, electronics and even have their documents shredded all in one location.”

The event will accept the following items for recycling:

  • Tires that have inside diameters of 22” or less, without rims
  • CFL bulbs
  • Batteries
  • Plastic #1 and #2
  • Household hazardous waste that includes home cleaning products, automotive products, indoor pesticides and paint. The disposal of these items is limited to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste, and you must show a Suffolk ID.
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic bags
  • Glass containers
  • Cans
  • Electronics, except tube TVs, which can be placed out on trash collection day and disposed of by the city refuse department.
  • Gently used clothing

Up to three brown grocery bags’ worth of documents may be shredded at the event. Keep Suffolk Beautiful is also supporting the Suffolk Public Library Denim Drive and will accept any and all denim items.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Suffolk Lions Club will be onsite to collect canned food, boxed meals, baby food, wipes, hearing aids and eye glasses.

Suffolk Mosquito Control will also be present with information on how to control mosquito populations at home, and to give away free Mosquito Dunks to residents. Residents with a Suffolk ID can get a pack of two dunks with information on how best to use them, according to the press release.
