A great Mutt Strut

Dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds and colors were enjoying the fine weather at Bennett’s Creek Park on Sunday.

Plenty of humans came along, too — more than 400 of them, being pulled by their leashed pups in dozens of different directions at the Suffolk Humane Society’s 11th Annual Mutt Strut.

There were food and beverages for both humans and dogs to enjoy, kiddie pools for dogs to jump into, exciting demonstrations and more. There was a lure course and agility track, pet-friendly toys for sale and more for the dogs, and humans could peruse vendors offering veterinary care and adoptions and enjoy the live music. Hey, maybe the dogs enjoyed the music too. Who are we to say?

VIPER — Virginians Interested in Protecting Every Reptile — was also on site showing off some of its ambassador animals and rescues.

But all the fun was for a good cause. The event is one of the two main fundraisers for the Suffolk Humane Society each year, along with its Paws for the Arts gala in February. This year’s Mutt Strut raised $20,000, a great total that will help support the society’s important work.

The Suffolk Humane Society advocates for companion animals by encouraging fostering and adoptions from the Suffolk Animal Care Center. It supports spay/neuter programs and promotes humane education so our youngest generation can grow up knowing how to be compassionate to animals.

We are proud of this excellent organization in our city and urge everyone to support them at every opportunity. Congratulations to them on another successful Mutt Strut.
