Student struck while getting off bus

A student was struck while exiting his school bus in downtown Suffolk on Monday afternoon.
The accident was reported at 3:21 p.m., according to a city press release. The student was exiting the school bus in the 400 block of Market Street when he was struck by a vehicle, the driver of which remained on scene.
The bus was transporting students from King’s Fork High School, the release stated.
The student suffered injuries considered serious but not life-threatening, the press release stated. He was taken to Sentara Obici Hospital and then airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The roadway was closed in the area immediately following the crash. The Suffolk Police Department is still investigating.
