Virginia is still climbing up the ranks as one of the states with the cheapest gas prices, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced Monday.

The price for regular unleaded gas in Virginia was reported to be $2.31 as of Monday, which is 36 cents cheaper than last year. Some parts of Virginia have even lower gas prices, as well, including the $2.25 price average in Hampton Roads, which is 28 cents cheaper than last year, according to the press release.

Despite an unseasonal spike in demand, gas prices are decreasing for the majority of motorists nationwide. The national average gas price was $2.63 as of Monday, which is two cents less than last week and 26 cents cheaper than last year, but six cents more expensive than last month, the press release stated.

“We expect this trend to continue in Virginia, barring any major industry or geopolitical events,” Georjeane Blumling, spokeswoman for AAA Tidewater Virginia, stated in the press release. “But the real savings we’re seeing is when prices are compared to this same time last year.”

Gasbuddy.com on Monday evening recorded regular gas prices in Suffolk that ranged from $2.13 to $2.29 per gallon, a solid decrease compared to the $2.18 to $2.39 per gallon range that was recorded on Oct. 1.
