Former Nansemond River High School standout Kevin Johnson has earned his third MEAC Rookie of the Week award for the Norfolk State University football team.
Last weekend against Bethune-Cookman University, Johnson had a career-high 178 all-purpose yards to go along with two touchdowns. That performance was good for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor.
Johnson rushed 18 times for 97 yards and one score and also posted career highs of four receptions for 81 yards and another touchdown receiving. His touchdown reception covered 46 yards, and he later scored on a four-yard run. With three selections, Johnson is the only player to earn that many Rookie of the Week selections this season.
Johnson leads NSU with eight total touchdowns, third-most in the MEAC this year. Among MEAC players, Johnson also ranks third in all-purpose yards with 113.7 a game and kick return average with 18.7, and seventh in rushing 49.4 yards per game. His previous two MEAC Rookie of the Week honors came against Virginia State University and Montana State University.
At Nansemond River, Johnson played on both sides of the ball and was an All-District, All-Region and All-State performer. During his junior season, he helped the Warriors reach the Class 5 state semifinals. As a senior for the Warriors, he was All-District on offense and defense and was selected All-Region. Johnson was also a standout for the Nansemond River track and field team, earning state title and national titles.
