Opportunities for Suffolk engagement

Suffolk Public Library is inviting members of the community to learn more about local community opportunities and organizations, network with fellow Suffolkians and get engaged in their city.

“Engage Suffolk” will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. This event is free and open to the public with no library membership required.

“The purpose of the event is to educate community members on organizations and services available in Suffolk and the surrounding region, offer opportunities through organizations where Suffolk citizens can become active community caretakers, and create meaningful relationships between community members and local organizations with the purpose of building a stronger and more connected Suffolk community,” Adult Program Services Coordinator Ashley Reed wrote in an email.

There will be representatives from various organizations available to share information, workshops and discussions for attendees and a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Organizations will include the Boys and Girls Club, Friends of the Suffolk Library, LGBT Life Center, Pennies for People, Animals, Wildlife, and Shelters, the Suffolk Literacy Council and the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Ministry Food Pantry.

“Hopefully, folks who attend walk away feeling more invested in their community, knowledgeable about how to be good community caretakers, and connected to organizations doing good for the community,” Reed wrote.

There will also be an offsite volunteer opportunity for participants during the event through the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Ministry. From 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 2, participants can assist the ministry’s food pantry at their location at 211 E. Washington St.

“They need folks to offload donation trucks, process food donations, and help with distribution process at their location downtown from (9 a.m. to noon) that morning,” Reed wrote. “Also, they need assistance loading remaining items from the Main Street United Methodist Church yard sale at the church, and then also unloading the trucks back at the fellowship center and preparing the items for client shopping.”
