Time is running out to sign up for the Home of the Brave 5K and Kids Quarter-Mile Dash on Nov. 9 in downtown Suffolk.

The race will begin and end near the courthouse, 150 N. Main St. The quarter-miler will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9 a.m. The 5K course will make its way past City Hall and over to Prentis Street, past the historic Seaboard Station Railroad Museum and then back by Pinner Street. Runners will enjoy the challenge of two bridges crossing over railroad tracks.

The 5K will have a cutoff time of 90 minutes to allow walkers to finish. Age group and top-finisher awards will be given for the 5K, which will be timed by A&R Timing, according to the press release. Every finisher receives a medal.

The entire course is stroller-friendly. All registered participants will receive an event T-shirt.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Mark Furlo, “the purpose of the Home of the Brave 5K is for runners to enjoy a 5K run in beautiful downtown Suffolk and perhaps get a personal best time.” Runners are asked to wear red, white and blue to show support for veterans.

Following the race, participants can enjoy live music by Whiskey Rebellion from 9 a.m. to noon, as well as one free beverage and one free slice of pizza. Vendors, giveaways and more will also be on site.

The registration fee for the 5K is $42, while the Quarter-Mile Dash — which is open to ages 2 to 10 — is $27. The race packet pick-up will be held on Nov. 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Nansemond Brewing Station on East Washington Street or from 7 to 8 a.m. the day of the race at the start/finish line.
