The Lakeland High School football team took a 51-7 loss last Friday to Indian River High School.
The Cavs finished its first season under Coach Joe Jones with a 0-10 record. It was a tough loss for the Lakeland team, which had been hoping to finish the season with at least one win.
When Jones took the job back in the spring, he knew a rebuild was ahead, with not a lot of Cavs players having a lot of varsity experience.
They were competitive a few games this season, but ultimately, lack of experience got them. Jones has said that his team is eyeing the offseason and will head into the offseason with some positive things — for one, they are poised to return 90 percent of starters on both sides of the ball.
Jones will also get a chance to get his first full offseason with the young Cavs team after being hired late in the process. The Cavs knew this season was a stepping stone toward next season and are excited about what’s ahead.
