Ruby Ernell “Nell” Evans, 67, of Custis Road, Suffolk, transitioned Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Ruby Mae Brown Johnson and Joseph Lee Johnson Sr. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Lolita Johnson, and three brothers, Joseph L. Johnson, Walter R. Johnson and Henry Lee Johnson Sr.

Ruby was a 1973 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. Ruby retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in December 2018 as an executive secretary in the Human Resources Department. She loved football, and her favorite team was the Washington Redskins.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Eugene F. Evans, of Suffolk; daughter, Tonya P. Bishop, of Suffolk; son, Kevin G. Evans, of Suffolk; brothers, Wilmer T. Johnson, of Newark, N.J., William E. Johnson (Alicia), of Newark, N.J., Jeffery N. Johnson (Diane), of Franklin, and James S. Johnson (Brenda), of Suffolk, Kenneth L. Sheilds (Debra); grandchildren, Kiera, Keonte, Kederer, Kishera and Kerye; great-grandchildren, Kimare, Kyree and Timothy; aunt, Jeaneatte Jenkins, of Ahoskie, N.C.; uncle, Clarence Marshall, of Hampton; best friend, Sandi Austin, of Hampton; her beloved pet dog, Romeo; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at Antioch U.C.C., 900 Hull St., Suffolk. The Rev. Jarvis Jones will deliver the message of comfort. She will be laid to rest in Little Mt. Zion Church Cemetery. The family will receive guest at 1110 Custis Road, Suffolk.
