A new community organization will be serving Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday to all who need it.
Dr. Bernetta Walker-Phillips, founder of The Dream School Inc., said she started the new organization after becoming concerned about young people while doing her doctoral dissertation.
“I found out in America we have 2.4 million youth between middle school and high school dropping out of school every year,” she said. “The major cause is poverty or hunger.”
She said she has been trying to help families who are needy, and this is her first big event.
“I want to try to help families who may be needy or might just need a small helping hand,” she said.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Rennee’s Celebration Center, 178 E. Washington St.
While it is open to all, it is geared toward those who are homeless, lonely or do not have enough to eat at home.
“I want people to come,” she said. “I don’t care what the situation is. They can come and eat.”
