Police chase starts near city

A police chase that started in the Western Branch area ended with a crash in Newport News early Wednesday.

Chesapeake Police responded to the area of Dunedin Drive and Western Branch Boulevard about 3 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a call of suspicious activity in the area, a Chesapeake Police Department press release stated.

Officers saw a gray sedan leaving the area and stopped it in the area of Western Branch Boulevard and Bridge Road near the Suffolk city line, the release stated.

When an officer approached the vehicle, it took off, leading officers on a pursuit that went across the James River Bridge and into Newport News, the press release stated. The suspect vehicle crashed in the area of Mercury Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, and all four occupants ran, the release stated.

Police located the driver and identified her as 20-year-old Shaniya Artis, of Chesapeake. She has been charged with eluding police, obstruction of justice and possession of marijuana, the press release stated.

The other occupants were not located.
