One last push

If you’re a regular reader of this page, you’re probably growing just a bit weary of reading about the Cheer Fund this season.

We may have written about it just a little bit more than normal. You see, a lot of charities and nonprofits that depend heavily on Christmas giving are struggling this year because of the lateness of Thanksgiving. It cut about a week off of the “traditional Christmas season,” and we believe it has impacted our donations this year.

While we are so grateful for everyone who has given, we haven’t yet made the goal of $40,000. Last year, we made the goal the day before Christmas, so perhaps you can see why we’re a bit anxious to be behind this year.

However, the good news is that you still have a week or two to give to the Cheer Fund and apply your gift to this year’s giving season. All of this year’s toys have been purchased, chosen by parents and are now being loved by thousands of children right here in Suffolk. This year’s giving will purchase next year’s toys, and we don’t want to fall behind on our fundraising and shortchange children down the road.

The Cheer Fund is an easy way to make sure your hard-earned money goes directly, 100 percent to putting toys — and a little Christmas cheer — in the hands of children right here in Suffolk.

No donation is too big or too small. We’ve had folks give $5, and we have a small number of donations from organizations and foundations in the $2,000 to $4,000 range.

Not only that, but no donation is too early or too late. We accept donations all year long, and any donation that doesn’t buy toys in one year simply gets rolled over to the next year.

It all adds up, we hope, to more than $40,000 each year. A donation of any amount, at any time, helps us buy toys for needy children in Suffolk, so we hope you’ll give generously from your heart.

To donate to the Cheer Fund, send a check to P.O. Box 1220, Suffolk, VA 23439 or bring it to the newspaper’s office, 130 S. Saratoga St., from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

We will list your donation in the newspaper, but it can be marked “anonymous” if you like. Donations may be made in honor of or in memory of someone. If you bring the check to our office, we’ll even take your picture as you hand it to one of our staff.

If you’d like to give online, there is a link available on the Suffolk Cheer Fund’s Facebook page.
