After seven straight wins, the Lady Cavs took a loss in the Boo Williams Holiday Tournament.

The Lakeland High School girls’ basketball team is now 7-1 on the season after taking a 64-57 Blue Bracket Championship loss to Atlee High School. The loss ended a solid win streak for Lady Cavs, who had previously defeated every single one of their opponents by double digits.

Overall, Lakeland had strong performances last weekend in the holiday tournament after having two wins over Jamestown High School and Green Run High School. Even in the loss, Coach Daryl Rountree felt they competed hard until the very end.

“We are still confident,” Rountree said. “We played well throughout the whole tournament. We played well defensively and shot well, so despite the loss, it was a good weekend.”

Even though the Lady Cavs were upset their win streak had come to an end, the team took everything in stride as a learning experience. Rountree admits that he couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season than what the Lady Cavs have had so far. The key is continuing to build on the success in 2020.

“We just have to continue to keep the wins coming,” Rountree said. “The girls were a bit upset they lost, but we know we can use this as a learning experience, and we feel like this is going to continue to help us going forward.”

Even with Lakeland having defeated teams by as many as 40 points, Rountree doesn’t believe the team has played their best yet. He is hoping that as Lakeland gears up for the latter half of its schedule, the team can make strides as it continues to stack wins. It’s like night and day for a Lakeland team was that was 1-7 around this time last year. Rountree credits his girls for the hard work they have put in since then.

“We know there are still a few areas for us to get better in, and we’ll continue to keep working on those things,” Rountree said. “We feel like that complete game is coming. And for us to be where we are right now in comparison to where we were last year is a good feeling. The girls worked hard over the summer, and last season showed that the experience we were able to get helped us a lot.”

Despite being the runners-up in the Blue Bracket, the Lady Cavs also received some individual accolades. Jaelyn Brown and Kiana Gray were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Lakeland will get back to district play Monday at Landstown High School.
