The Suffolk Art League will present The Exhibit of Excellence: Suffolk Student Art 2020, which will feature the best artwork by the city’s sophomores, juniors and seniors from Feb. 4-28 at the Suffolk Art Gallery.

The juried exhibit is open to students in grades 10-12 and who live in or attend public school, private school or are homeschooled in Suffolk. Students do not have to be enrolled in an art class to enter their work.

Each student must enter two works, which must be original and not copied from another artist’s paintings, photographs or other work. Two-dimensional works may be framed or matted with a heavy cardboard backing and covered with acetate, and they must have a wire on the back that is securely attached for hanging.

All artwork must have a label attached to the back that includes the title of the work, the medium used, the artist’s name and the school they attend. A limited amount of mat board and acetate are available at the Art League’s office.

Examples of acceptable media include drawing, graphic design, original prints, photography, paintings, sculpture, pottery and crafts such as jewelry, weaving and woodcarving.

Work must be delivered to the Suffolk Art Gallery at 118 Bosley Ave. between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Jan. 28. All, some or none of the works may be accepted for the exhibition.

Works not selected must be picked up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Jan. 30.

Sharon Swift, professor of art and art department chair at Virginia Wesleyan University, will be this year’s juror.

The opening reception and awards presentation will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Suffolk Art Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

The Exhibit of Excellence is presented in cooperation with the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission. For more information or to receive a complete prospectus, visit the Suffolk Art League’s website at www.suffolkartleague.com, email suffolkartleague@verizon.net or call the art league’s office at 925-0448.
