Gas prices drop with temperature

Coinciding with the January cold, gas prices in Virginia have been dropping since last week, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced Monday.

According to the Monday press release, the average price for gas in Virginia is $2.35, which is two cents less than last week, but still 30 cents more expensive than last year.

Hampton Roads is seeing a similar change at the gas pumps, and as of Monday, the price for gas in Hampton Roads was $2.30. The national gas price average is $2.54, which is three cents cheaper than last week, a penny less than last month and 30 cents more than a year ago.

Gas prices edged cheaper in the past week as gasoline stocks grew, measuring at 258 million barrels — “a stock level not recorded by the Energy Information Administration in nearly a year,” the press release states.

“Motorists across the country are paying less to fill up as U.S. gasoline supply outpaces demand this winter,” Holly Dalby, AAA spokeswoman, stated in a press release. “Typically, we see cheaper gas prices this time of year as motorists generally drive less.”

According to, gas prices in Suffolk ranged from $2.19 to $2.35 on Wednesday. That’s a decrease from the $2.24-to-$2.36 range that was recorded on on Jan. 7.
