A new event this Valentine’s Day will benefit the community service efforts of the Nansemond River Pilot Club.

The club will hold its first Valentine’s Ball on Valentine’s Day at the First Lady, 447 W. Washington St. The event will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. and feature heavy hors d’oeuvres, a live DJ, cash bar and dancing.

Nansemond River Pilot Club President Becky Adams said the club had gotten good response the past couple of years with its New Year’s Eve event. However, with Valentine’s Day on a Friday this year, club members felt they could start a Valentine’s event that would see more ticket sales.

“We had so many other events we were competing with on New Year’s Eve,” she said. “We thought we might get a hit. We’re just trying something new.”

Adams said the event is just a fun night of food and entertainment.

“It’s coming out on Valentine’s Day with your significant other and having a good time dancing — and good food and good fellowship and good fun,” she said.

Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at Suffolk Insurance, 202 Market St., or at the Suffolk Visitor Center, 524 N. Main St.
