Foundation announces scholarship opportunities

The Suffolk Foundation has announced the availability of 11 scholarships to benefit area high school seniors and graduates of area high schools. The individual criteria for each scholarship vary and are available on the Suffolk Foundation website, suffolkfoundation.org/scholarships.

The available scholarships, their estimated value and minimum eligibility, are:

  • The Allfirst Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) — employees and employee family members of Allfirst Industrial General Contractors who intend to pursue a college degree or trade school certification
  • The James M. Blair Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) — graduating seniors of Suffolk public or private high schools who intend to pursue a college degree
  • The Ossie S. and Thomas F. Blair Jr. Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) — graduating seniors or former graduates of Suffolk public or private high schools, or accredited home school program conducted in Suffolk, who intend to pursue a college degree
  • The Colonel Fred V. Cherry Scholarship ($2,500) — graduating African-American seniors of Suffolk high schools who intend to pursue a college degree
  • The Distasio Health Professions Scholarship ($2,000) — graduating seniors of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, or Southampton County public or private high schools who intend to pursue a four-year pre-medical college program, including doctoral, physician’s assistant and nursing
  • The Louis & Mary Haddad Foundation Scholarship ($1,000) — graduating seniors of Suffolk high schools with a documented learning disability who intend to pursue a college degree or accredited career certification program
  • The William N. “Billy” Hill Scholarship ($1,000) — graduating seniors of Suffolk public high schools who intend to pursue a college degree in education
  • The Howard D. Mast Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) — graduating seniors or former graduates of Suffolk public or private high schools, or accredited home school programs conducted in Suffolk, who intend to pursue a college degree
  • The Lewis F. Morris Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) — graduating seniors of King’s Fork High School who intend to pursue a college degree
  • The Amy Phelps Art Scholarship ($2,000) — graduating seniors of Franklin, Smithfield, Southampton, Surry, Windsor, Sussex, Franklin high schools or Southampton Academy who intend to pursue a career in art in college
  • The Suffolk Business Women’s Scholarship ($2,500) — graduating female high school seniors who are Suffolk residents and U.S. citizens, who intend to pursue a full-time business major degree program at an accredited college or university

Other specific eligibility criteria apply to each scholarship; applicants are advised to closely follow the application guidelines for the specific scholarship.

The Suffolk Foundation will be working directly with the high school counselors and scholarship advisors in an effort to award at least one deserving recipient each scholarship. The scholarship applications are available now on the Suffolk Foundation website, suffolkfoundation.org/scholarships, and may also be obtained by visiting each senior’s high school counselor.
