Thelma Cayton Nixon, 88, of 202 Desert Road, Corapeake, N.C., and formerly of both Suffolk and the Macedonia community of Chowan County, N.C., died Wednesday, April 1, 2020, in her home.

Mrs. Nixon was born in Chowan County on Oct. 25, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Seth Alason and Maggie Warren Cayton. A homemaker, she had enjoyed the fellowship of Macedonia Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 66 years, William Alton “Billy” Nixon; her daughter, Carolyn Nixon; her sister, Christine Jackson; and her brothers, Clarence and Robert Lee Cayton.

Surviving are her daughter, Nancy Nixon Hatfield and husband, Lester, of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Karen Hatfield, Karla Sraver and husband, B.J., and Alan Hatfield; and four great-grandchildren, Austin, Avery, Raylan and Treslyn.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by the Rev. Bob Young. A private burial will follow in the Nixon Family Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service.
