A local organization has generously donated food to Suffolk residents since 2018 and is prepared to do it once more this year.
Suffolk United is hosting a free Thanksgiving food giveaway from 9 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 21 behind Kroger on Main Street, 201 Holly Lawn Parkway. This drive-through giveaway is for anyone who needs food this Thanksgiving. There are no specific requirements, registrations, or proven needs to receive food. With so many affected by the pandemic this year, Suffolk United Inc. wants to just give away food.
“We are excited to be able to come to the community’s aid in such a difficult time,” said Bishop A.S. Hall Sr., president of Suffolk United Inc. “Everyone needs a little bit of love. Hopefully, we are able to meet that need in our community.”
Suffolk United Inc. is a collaboration of churches and businesses that strive to unite the city of Suffolk by meeting different needs. According to Hall, this organization’s goal is to come to Suffolk’s aid to make the city a better place by giving away food, masks, or school supplies.
“It’s not just through one, but many platforms used to aid our city,” said Hall.
Over 35 churches have participated in preparation of the giveaway to make sure this giveaway is successful. Members have come forward to donate food, money and time to provide for their community this Thanksgiving. Businesses and organizations that have donated include Crocker Funeral Home and Suffolk Ruritan Club.
“We feel like everyone should have a great Thanksgiving,” said Hall. “We hope people can come out and enjoy.”
Food to be given away includes turkey, potatoes, corn, collard greens, stuffing, gravy, cornbread mix, cake mix, rice, peas, mac and cheese, string beans, paper products and more. The event is first-come, first-served, with a plan to give away enough food to feed more than 500 families.
