Beginning this month, wooden railroad ties will be replaced on the Portsmouth Division of the CSX line — part of which stretches from Garysburg, N.C., up through Suffolk.
Erika L. Elmore, assistant manager for CSX Transportation Division, said the maintenance requires a very large CSX team that specializes in such work. The asphalt where vehicles cross over will have to be torn out in order to replace the ties.
She added that signage will be set up to mark detours, and each crossing will be closed anywhere from two to five days. That amount of time could change, with or without notice, owing to unforeseen conditions such as inclement weather; rescheduling is also a possibility.
In Suffolk, work will not start until next month. Suffolk work sites include the following:
- Kingsale Road (off of Indian Trail) closing on or around Feb. 11
- Indian Trail (Near Carr Lane) closing on or around Feb. 11
- Buckhorn Drive (Near Deer Path Road) closing on or around Feb. 15
- Kenyon Road (near Amadas Industries and the YMCA Camp Arrowhead) closing on or around Feb. 18
