Obelia Harris, also known as “Mom,” “GrandMa,” “GG,” “Miss B” and “OB,” departed this earthly life into the waiting arms of her Heavenly Father on Jan. 19, 2021.
Obelia was a member of East End Baptist Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She retired from Planters with almost 30 years of service as a line operator. She was also a member of the Local 26 Union. Obelia loved being out in her yard, doing her own yard work that included cutting grass — riding and pushing the mower — trimming the trees, and edging. She loved being a part of the Tiger Riders Bike Club functions, and they made her an honorary member and all knew her as “Aunt B.” She also enjoyed playing cards with her family, spending time on the phone with her friends, and helping others. Obelia would drop what she was doing to assist the next person and was often doing things for others. She was truly a special being.
Obelia is survived by her son, Michael Harris, of Jarratt; daughters, Shildia Bond (Clarence Bond), of Lewiston, N.C., Lesia Harris, of Suffolk, Marvis Harris, of Suffolk, Deveda Boone (Wayne Jefferson), of Chesapeake, Dwight Gwaltney, of Suffolk; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, William Lawrence; one sister, Rosa Grandison; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, at Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery, 1421 Kings Fork Road, Suffolk. Harris Funeral Home Inc. has been entrusted with the homegoing service. Please follow the guidelines of social distancing at the required six feet apart and please wear a mask.
