Two SAL scholarships available

Suffolk students with an interest in the arts can apply for two scholarships that are now open.

The Board of Directors of the Suffolk Art League recently announced that applications are available for the 2021-2022 Suffolk Art League’s Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Memorial Student Scholarship and the John R. Taylor Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship for Visual Arts. Applications for both are due April 22.

These student scholarships are available to students entering grades 6 to 12 in the 2021-2022 school year. These are not college scholarships. Students must either live in or attend school in Suffolk, either public, private or homeschool.

This year for the Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Memorial Student Scholarship, the Suffolk Art League is offering up to $4,630 in scholarship funds for students to pursue their interest in the visual, performing or literary arts. The money may be used to take classes or lessons, purchase materials, instruments or equipment or attend workshops and conferences.

The application needs to include a completed application form, a brief essay written by the student and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or another knowledgeable person.

For the John R. Taylor Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship for Visual Arts, the Suffolk Art League is offering up to $495 for students to pursue their interest in the visual arts. The money can be used for classes, lessons or purchasing materials or equipment.

The application must include a completed application form, a brief essay written by the student, two images of the student’s work no smaller than 5×7 and a recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or another knowledgeable person.

The Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Scholarship and the John R. Taylor Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship for Visual Arts applications are available in multiple places. Students can find applications at Suffolk school guidance offices and arts teachers, the Suffolk Art Gallery, by calling the Suffolk Art League office at 925-0448 or by visiting suffolkartleague.com.
