The Virginia Department of Transportation on Monday announced that its former Hampton Roads District complex in downtown Suffolk is up for sale, according to a press release.
VDOT has listed the 87-acre Suffolk property through the Virginia Department of General Services’ contracted real estate broker, Divaris Real Estate Inc.
An online listing for the property calls it a “prime waterfront development parcel” that offers “an unparalleled opportunity for redevelopment in the heart of Suffolk.” There is about 350 feet of frontage on North Main Street and more than 4,000 feet of waterfront. No price is listed; the website says to call for offers.
In 2017, the Virginia General Assembly authorized VDOT to market, sell and convey the downtown Suffolk property and use the proceeds toward the acquisition and construction of a new district office facility.
Administrative and engineering staff from VDOT’s Hampton Roads District had occupied the complex of buildings and trailers, located at 1700 N. Main St., for more than 60 years. Approximately 250 workers relocated in August 2018 to an 85,000-square-foot, three-story building on Burbage Drive in North Suffolk, the district’s current headquarters.
Remaining operations and maintenance staff at the downtown Suffolk location will be relocated depending on the successful closing of the real estate sale and the awarding of a contract for the construction of a new district annex in the Northgate Industrial Park in Suffolk.
