A new church location is making its Suffolk debut on Easter Sunday.

Bishop Joseph Colander is starting a second location to his church, New Rehoboth Kingdom Ministries, at 129 Tynes St. The first service will be its 9:30 a.m. Easter service, with a brunch to follow for those who would like to attend.

Ever since Colander felt led to start this Suffolk location, he knew the perfect time to start would be on Easter Sunday.

“The Lord put it in my spirit for us to open on Resurrection Sunday to bring a resurrection of hope to Suffolk,” said Colander. “Especially during this time of this pandemic, people need hope, love and support. This will be not only a day of God resurrecting his spirit but a resurrection of the people of God.”

According to Colander, New Rehoboth Kingdom Ministries is a Pentecostal church that believes in divine healing and operates solely with the Holy Spirit to reach out to the community.

New Rehoboth Kingdom Ministries has its first location in Newport News, which Colander also leads. He felt the Lord calling him to open a second location of his church in his hometown of Suffolk. Colander plans to pastor both churches by spending Saturdays at the Newport News location and Sundays at the new Suffolk location.

“The Lord put it in my spirit to put a location in my hometown of Suffolk to help the people here have a closer walk with the Lord,” said Colander.

Many residents of Suffolk may remember Colander’s father, Bishop Obadiah Colander, who served many years as pastor of Faith Temple Ministries Apostolic Church off Wellons Street before his passing.

Colander plans to lead his church to reach out and feed, clothe and house people in need.

“We want to let Suffolk know they have a place to come to receive healing and Jesus,” said Colander. “I am a firm believer in sharing love and reaching the lost at any cost.”
