Road reopens after pig truck crash

Godwin Boulevard has reopened after crews cleared an overturned tractor-trailer that was carrying 167 pigs to Smithfield Foods.
The roadway reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m., according to a city press release. The accident happened at 1:42 a.m. in the 4100 block of Godwin Boulevard.
The driver of the truck received minor injuries and was cited for failure to maintain proper control.
Smithfield Foods sent a team to the scene to assist.
According to a Smithfield Foods spokesperson, a total of 167 animals were on the truck, and animal wellbeing protocols were implemented. Twelve died in the accident, and 12 more were euthanized at the scene. A total of 143 were delivered to Smithfield.
