The Suffolk Art League with the Suffolk Art Gallery will host Summer Art Days in person this summer.

Summer Art Days will take place every Thursday from July 8 to Aug. 12 at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave.

Each week, students from ages 5 to 14 will participate in age-appropriate crafts. The day will be divided into two sessions. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., students ages 5 to 8 will participate in their art in the mornings. Then, from 1 to 3 p.m., the students ages 9 to 14 will do their art project.

“This way, we can do projects that can be successful but with a challenge,” said Linda Bunch, executive director of the Suffolk Art League. “It’s summer, so we want them to have fun but still learn some new skills.”

Returning instructor Cynthia Quesenberry will teach the classes to bring various art projects for the students to take part in this summer. Quesenberry teaches art at Oakland Elementary School.

Activities for the morning class include funny face mixed media collage, Romero Britto-inspired designs, sunset silhouettes, Rorschach art prints, taco fish in air dry clay and ocean life paper relief sculptures. In the afternoon, the older students will try Yayoi Kusama-inspired flower art and mushrooms, overlapping graphic design a la Jasper Johns, Keith Haring action figures, Japanese fish kites, seashore painting and perspective drawing.

Registration cost is $1 per child per session. Due to COVID-19, pre-registration is required and only 12 students can attend each session. Masks are required in the gallery, and COVID-19 precautions will be in place.

“We are thrilled we can do this again even in small groups,” said Bunch. “It’s so much better to do it that way.”

Suffolk Art Days are made possible in part through grants from the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission and the Community Action Coalition of Virginia.
