In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, folks can participate in a local walk for all cancers.
Healing Baptist Church and Metropolitan Baptist Church are teaming up once again to host their Cancer Awareness Walk. For the past six years, the two churches have come together to remember those lost to cancer and support those struggling with the financial burden of cancer.
For this walk, folks can choose to participate in person or virtually. The in-person walk will take place at 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at Planters Park, 515 York St. Those not yet ready to gather in a large group can walk wherever they choose. Folks can walk down their street, at their favorite park or somewhere with a smaller group. Those participating virtually are asked to post pictures of their walk on Facebook with #amileforawareness.
“We are very excited about coming together again,” said Sharon Daughtrey, one of the founders of the walk.
All money will go to Daniel’s Grace and Nobody Fights Alone, two nonprofits that help those diagnosed with cancer handle expenses.
This walk was started by Daughtrey and Monica Lassiter, who both lost loved ones to different types of cancer. Daughtrey received help from Nobody Fights Alone, and Lassiter received help from Daniel’s Grace, making both charities very important to these women.
The walk in past years has had a speaker talk about the importance of early screenings and a ceremony in honor of loved ones lost. However, this year is only the walk, whether folks participate together or apart.
To participate, folks should make a $10 donation on Cash App $allcancersmatter or on PayPal to Monica Lassiter.
