Art is healing

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the article titled “Finding Healing Through Art,” published in your newspaper on Oct. 20.

I really enjoyed this article. I grew up right by the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts and visited many times when I was younger. Art has always been a passion of mine, and I do believe it can have a big impact on people’s mental health. I think it is a wonderful idea to create this exhibition, because not only is the art allowing anyone who wants to submit to express what healing means for them, it also brings people together. It reminds them that they aren’t alone.

I think that as we progress as a society, our mental health is simultaneously declining, so to have a resource of art that allows people to acknowledge the importance of our mental health is so crucial. In the age of social media, it is very nice to see this form of “healing” versus an app that is supposed to help you. People tend to not realize how much our phones can isolate us from each other, so to see self help that you can do in person in your free time is so much more beneficial that what you can accomplish with your phone. I really hope people are taking advantage of this wonderful exhibition.
