A church in Suffolk is providing a special way to kick off the Christmas season this year.
South Quay Baptist Church is once again hosting its annual Journey Through Christmas from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 10-11 at 9617 South Quay Road.
Both nights, folks can come to get a guided tour through seven outdoor, live scenes that tell the life of Jesus from before His birth to His resurrection. To make these scenes, there are 25 actors and live animals to play the parts. Folks from Central Baptist Church of Yorktown travel down to help with casting, too.
“Lots of people grow up in church or are in and out of the church that don’t have a full understanding of who Jesus is or why He came to die,” said Cheryl Baird, organizer of the event. “The goal is to tell that through this drama.”
After folks take this journey through the past, they can enjoy free hot chocolate and Christmas cookies.
In addition, all kids who attend will receive a candy stocking.
This is the third year that Baird and her husband, Pastor Richard, have brought the event to Suffolk. Their previous church in Florida put on Journey Through Christmas every year for folks to enjoy. When the Bairds came up to Suffolk, their pastor in Florida gave them the rights to bring the journey up north to Suffolk.
“It’s lots of fun, and to start one here is special,” said Baird. “It’s a great way to kick off the Christmas holiday. It’s a neat opportunity for the community.”
Due to the event being entirely outdoors, folks are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, as the event will go on despite the rain or cold. Folks are also encouraged to wear masks.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit South Quay Baptist Church on Facebook or call the church office at 757-657-9483.
