Meals on Wheels will be delivering more smiles locally as it changes its name to Meals on Wheels of Suffolk and Isle of Wight.

The organization, previously known as Suffolk Meals on Wheels, always served parts of Windsor, Isle of Wight and Smithfield, but that was not reflected in its Suffolk-centric name. The organization recently decided to make the change to help folks realize the full scope of what the organization does.

This name change not only calls attention to the fact that the group’s geographic area of service is larger than many thought; it also provides a chance for people to learn about opportunities to receive meals or to volunteer and to learn about the great work this organization does.

Many know that Meals on Wheels delivers food to seniors who have experienced physical or financial hardships and face food insecurity. Many times, someone is being released from the hospital or is trying to continue living on their own but is unable to prepare his or her own hot, fresh, nutritious meals.

However, many may not know that for many clients of Meals on Wheels, the delivery volunteer is the only person they see all day. These deliveries give folks a connection to another human, a smile and a caring word, and someone to check on them just in case something has gone wrong. It is peace of mind for the clients and for those who love them who may be far away.

Meals are $7.50 per day, but those over 60 years of age who cannot pay can call Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia at 757-461-9481 to see if they qualify for financial help.

Due to COVID-19, the organization has not been able to hold fundraisers but has continued to grow in clients. Opportunities for donations and volunteerism are available.
