The warmer weather is coming, and that means it’s time to think about how you are going to keep your dogs cool. There are many ways to make sure your pup stays plenty cool this season without spending a lot of money on electricity or A/C.

Heatstrokes are a very real danger for dogs during warm weather. Heatstroke occurs when a dog’s internal temperature gets too high and they are unable to regulate their own body temperature. This can happen quickly on a hot day, even if your dog is only outside for a short period of time. Symptoms of heatstroke include heavy panting, increased heart rate, drooling, lethargy, weakness, collapse, seizures, and vomiting. If you think your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, it is important to get them to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

To prevent heatstrokes, it is important to keep an eye on your dog when they are outside and make sure they have plenty of water to drink.

Here are 10 tips for preparing your dog for warmer weather.

1) Provide shade and shelter.

This is the most important thing you can do for your dog in warm weather. Make sure they have a shady spot to lie down in and that they can get out of the sun if they need to.

2) Consider a cooling mat or bed.

These are great for dogs who spend a lot of time outside. They provide a cool place for your pup to lie down and can help keep their body temperature regulated.

3) Give them a cool place to drink.

Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times. You may even want to consider investing in a water fountain specifically for them.

4) Keep them groomed.

A well-groomed dog will be much cooler than one who is matted and tangled. Brush them regularly and make sure to trim their nails so they can’t overheat.

5) Avoid hot pavement.

Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads, so avoid walking them on it whenever possible. If you must walk on hot pavement, consider getting them boots or socks to protect their feet.

6) Don’t leave them in the car.

It can be tempting to leave your dog in the car while you run into the store, but it’s very dangerous. Cars heat up quickly, even on cooler days, and your dog could easily overheat and suffer from heatstroke.

7) Know the signs of heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a serious medical emergency and can be fatal if not treated immediately. Signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, call your veterinarian immediately.

8) Avoid strenuous exercise.

In warm weather, it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise with your dog. Stick to walks and shorter play sessions to prevent them from getting too overheated.

9) Keep an eye on senior dogs.

Older dogs are more susceptible to heatstroke and should be monitored closely in warm weather. If possible, keep them inside in the air conditioning or make sure they have a shady spot to lie down in.

10) Adjust their diet.

In warm weather, your dog may not have as much of an appetite. Adjust their food accordingly and make sure they are still getting the nutrients they need. You may also want to add some frozen treats to their diet to help them stay cool.

You may include cold fruits and veggies like apples, bananas, oranges, pears, mangoes, cucumbers, and celery if your dog is on a raw dog food diet. Seaweed or Kelp can also be used as a supplement to help cool down your hot dog.

By following these tips, you can help your dog stay cool and comfortable all summer long!
