The Virginia Employment Commission Veteran Employment Services and AARP Employment Services have returned to the Suffolk Workforce Development Center, 157 N. Main St.
AARP is accepting walk-ins at the Suffolk Workforce Development Center while veteran benefits and employment services are by appointment only. Residents can make an appointment by calling 757-514-7742. These free services were not available from 2019 through 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Veterans continue to struggle to gain employment because of culture gaps between civilian society and their military pasts as well as a lack of seamless integration amongst veteran care programs,” city officials said in a news release.
The AARP Foundation first matches eligible older job seekers with local nonprofits and public agencies so they can increase skills and build self-confidence while earning a modest income. The Senior Community Service Employment Program is the nation’s oldest program to help low-income, unemployed people age 55 and older find work.
