Patsy JoAnne McCanless Ashby, 82, of Suffolk, died June 14, 2022, at Lake Prince Woods.
A native of High Point, N.C., JoAnne spent her career in the Portsmouth Public School System, first as an elementary school teacher and then as a secretary at Cradock High School.
She loved to read and crochet, and she spent many hours watching the hummingbirds at their feeders behind her home near Whaleyville. She was a dedicated member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, where she was a deacon.
JoAnne was predeceased by her parents, Bonnie Lee and L.W. McCanless and by a daughter, Patricia Beth Staples.
She is survived by her husband, Nicholas G. Ashby; a daughter, Melody G. Wilson and a grandson, Joshua Staples.
An informal celebration of life luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 26, at Liberty Spring Christian Church, 4213 Whaleyville Blvd.
