William “Tom” Talmadge Nichols Sr., 79, of Chesapeake, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022. Born and raised in Suffolk, he was the son of the late Charlie and Ethel Duke Nichols.

Chief Nick proudly served the City of Suffolk and the Suffolk Fire Department for 41 years as Battalion Chief. Dedicated to his community, Tom was a member of the Nansemond Masonic Lodge #77, Berkley O.E.S. #52, and Past Patron Driver Ch. #149 O.E.S. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he enjoyed golfing, trips to Nags Head, Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst, and was so proud of running the Peachtree 10k Marathon in Atlanta, Georgia.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 11 years, Carolyn English Nichols; his sons, Tommy Nichols Jr. (Maria), Bobby Nichols (Michelle), Richard Asbell (Linda) and Buddy Cutler (Shannon); daughter, Chris Jeter (Reed); 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Kovalik (Richard); brother, Emery Nichols (Sue) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Parr Funeral Home in Suffolk. Masonic rites will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Westminster Presbyterian Church followed by burial at Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ruffin Alphin presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Tom can be made to the Jeff T. Massinger Memorial Fund, Attn: Pam King, 300 Kings Fork Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23434 to support Suffolk Fire & Safety Camp for children.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Brookdale Senior Living and Suncrest Hospice for their compassion and loving care.
