Earlene Johnson Hobbs, 79, left this world to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022. Earlene was a quiet, Godly woman who began every day with her husband, Kermit, in prayer, asking the Lord to show them His plan for their lives for that day and for the faith and strength to live it. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Good News Bible Class.
She graduated from Suffolk High School in 1961 and for some years afterward worked in the insurance business and at the family business, Hobbs-Adams Engineering Company. She later gave up her job to care for her family as a homemaker.
Earlene particularly enjoyed cooking, and for more than 40 years she hosted all her extended family at her home for Thanksgiving dinners. During those times, children who started out dining at the Kids’ Table eventually saw their own children and grandchildren doing the same.
She is survived by her husband, the love of her life, Oliver Kermit Hobbs Jr.; two sons, Neil T. Hobbs and wife Heather, and Wade T. Hobbs and wife Lori. She was blessed with five grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron, Wyatt, Callie and Charlotte (Tessie). She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Robert (Bobby) Brinkley and numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. The family would also like to recognize her dear and faithful friend, Brenda Cowan.
A celebration of Earlene’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at First Baptist Church, 237 N. Main St. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. in the Family Gathering Area in the church. Burial will take place at Holly Lawn Cemetery after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the First Baptist Church Building Fund. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Suffolk is serving the family. Condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com.
