Jacquelin Batten Culpepper, age 98, died on Monday, Oct. 17, 2022. She was born Dec. 26, 1923. Known to her family and friends as Jackie, she grew up on a farm near the town of

Smithfield and attended Smithfield High School and Westhampton College (now University of Richmond). 

After graduating from college with a BA, Jackie taught high school and coached basketball. She taught at Smithfield High School, Chuckatuck High School and Cypress Chapel High School. At both Smithfield High School and Chucktatuck High School, she had championship teams. She married James Franklin Culpepper Jr., of Suffolk. She and Frank had four children: Wayne Franklin Culpepper of Alexandria, Jacquelin Culpepper Cassada of Barboursville, James Stephen Culpepper of Luray and Shirley Culpepper Baldwin of Suffolk. Soon after the birth of her children, Jackie retired from teaching to raise her family.

Jackie had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress, pianist and cook. Above all Jackie was an excellent mother. She had a strong faith in God and taught her children to be self-reliant in the knowledge that a loving God is always watching over them. 

Her husband, Frank, and her daughter’s husband, Ed Cassada, predeceased Jackie. She is survived by her children, Wayne Franklin Culpepper (wife Syneth), Jacquelin Culpepper Cassada, James Stephen Culpepper (wife Karen) and Shirley Culpepper Baldwin (husband David); five grandchildren, Sarah Marks Baldwin, James Daniel Culpepper (wife Crystal), Matthew Lee Culpepper (wife Ahdieh) and Kuhn Keolong (wife Thida) and four great-grandchildren, Christian Daniel Culpepper; Noah Spencer Culpepper; Elizabeth Reese Culpepper and Henry Keolong. She is also survived by a sister, Gwen Batten Perkins (husband Linwood Perkins).

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in the Mill Swamp Baptist Church, 6329 Mill Swamp Road, Ivor, with Pastor Billy Gardner and Pastor Tim Rawls officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel.
