The Nansemond River girls field hockey team celebrated senior night with all the fanfare it deserved, Wednesday, Oct. 12.
That morning, Madie Baker (captain) and LaToya Lawhorn were moved to tears when they entered the decorated locker room and were adorned with sashes, tiaras and cheers.
The varsity and junior varsity players didn’t stop there—the field was lined with balloons, streamers, banners, posters and fans.
The Nansemond River football team joined in, cheering, chanting and creating a tunnel to welcome the team onto the field. Baker and Lawhorn led the way while the Magnificent Marching Warriors rocked crowd.
Little did they know the celebration wouldn’t stop there. Both seniors scored during the game, with Baker scoring three times. They led the team to a 12-0 win, and moved the team’s record to 12-1.
After the game, the Senior Recognition ceremony began. The seniors were escorted by their parents and siblings through a tunnel lined with players and field hockey sticks and silly string flying in the air.
Words of appreciation for their leadership and dedication from flowed freely as did the tears as Warriors Coach Allison Dize spoke to the crowd. After receiving gift baskets from their teammates and capturing these memories with pictures, the team concluded with a dinner celebration at Gianna’s.
