Evelyn Luter “Granny” Archer, age 96, of Wytheville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022. She was born on Feb. 14, 1926 in Suffolk to Rosser Clayton Luter Sr. and Dorothy Louise Rountree Luter. She was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married on October 27, 1944, in Leon, Florida, George “Edwin” Archer Sr. and a brother, Rosser Clayton Luter Jr. She was a long-time, active member of the Suffolk Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies and interests were Quilters Guild, cooking, family historian, football games, sewing and making lead bullets in the kitchen.
She leaves behind two sons and daughters-in-law, George E. “Sonny” Jr. and Cindy Archer of Wytheville and Alan Stuart and Diane Archer of Earlysville; sister, Anne Jean Butcher of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Jessica Kim Brown (Glenn), Kelly Bryant (Jim), R.J. Archer (Kim) and D.G. Archer (Sydney); five great-grandchildren, Walt, Sadie, Emily, Tripp and Hudson; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Carolyn Archer of Big Stone Gap.
A graveside service is at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at West End Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to say a special thanks to Commonwealth Senior Living, especially, Sheila, Granny’s “adopted” granddaughter, who took special care during her stay.
